Hammond is a town in Indiana, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Hammond was named for General George Hammond who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. Representative from that state. Hammond is located in southeastern Indiana on the Indiana-Ohio border and is bordered by Ohio to the north and east, Delaware County to the south, and Posey County to the west. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Hammond was Nicholas Hervey who arrived in 1785 with his family from England. He set up a trading post near what is now North Bend on the Ohio River. In 1814, Isaac Baird founded Baird's Station on what are now Baird's Fork Road and Railroad which became Hammondsville after Baird's death in 1836. In 1837, John Tilton established Tilton's Station on what are now West Main Street and Little Miami Trail across from present day North Bend High School which became home of Hammond’s first school district (later called Grades 4-8) when it opened its doors for instruction in October 1838. In 1840, David Bogue founded Bogue’s Landing on Big Creek about two miles northeast of present day North Bend along Big Creek Road between Illinois Highway 6 (now I-465) and US 421 (now I-465). This landing helped supply munitions during World War II because it sat on an embankment over Big Creek that allowed unimpeded access to water supplies essential to arm America’s forces against Nazi Germany Bogue also owned land adjacent to this landing where he built several homes including one still standing today known as “the old Bogue house” which stands at First Avenue Northeast corner Third Street South within walking distance of current day North Bend Middle School The Landing name has been changed multiple times throughout its history but remains associated with this important early community center Hammondsville Carnegie Library opened its doors in 1914 following a gift from Mrs Carrie Carnegie . The library was moved to its current location on Airport Boulevard just north of East Mound Road before being destroyed by fire in 1998 . However due to public outcry it reopened under new ownership just blocks away thanks to donations by citizens soon afterward . The original building still stands next doorto our current library building One significant event that took place during these years included the opening ofIndiana State Normal School located at 8th & Washington Streets which would become home for many local farmersparticularly those doing farming or ranching business thereby allowing them more opportunity than they had ever experienced before while also providing their children with education outside of their home village
