Since 2000,HAMNOND has seen an increase in retail trade with restaurants and bars opening up along US-36 corridor east of I-465 (the "Hammond Beltway"). This growth has helped support job growth within local businesses while also increasing access to employment opportunities outside of town limits for residents who may need not only food but also transportation services once located within hamilton's boundaries. Today's community takes pride in its history and cultural heritage; many residents still speak or understand French fluently due to official language programs offered throughout primary schools across central Hendricks County! Hammond is a city in and the county seat of Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,630 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Hammond is located on the Connecticut River near its confluence with the Ohio River. The first permanent settler in what is now Hammond was Nicholas French in 1814. By 1825, there were seven families living in this area. In 1827, territorial government was organized and Indian land east of the Illinois line became part of Indiana Territory; this included most of what is now Hendricks County. The first post office in Hammond was established in 1830, and by 1835 it had become an important transportation center because of its location on Canisteo Creek between Benton and St Joseph counties. Hammond's growth began rapidly after statehood when new railroads were built following the American Civil War that connected eastern Illinois with central Indiana and points northward. Railroads brought more people and businesses to town, jobs that helped spur development both inside and outside of town itself. A flour mill opened in 1865 by Elijah Whitehead which led to a boom in agricultural production which continue until today; many other businesses followed including furniture stores (owned by John Ladd), shoe stores (owned by Wm Hogg), banks (owned by Hendricks State Bank), radios (founded as Kirtland Broadcasting Co.), newspapers (The Republican, founded as The Herald-Dispatch Company) as well as numerous small shops and restaurants throughout downtown Hammond throughout the years."
