Griffith is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan statistical area. Griffith was founded in 1836 by James Brown and others as an agricultural community on the river bank between present-day Owensboro and Evansville. The community grew rapidly after railroad construction began through that region in the 1840s, and by 1870 Griffith had a school, churches, and a post office. In 1882 Griffith became one of twelve townships in Howard County when it was created from parts of Floyd County. In 1955 Griffith became fully independent as a result of a referendum vote following the passage of state legislation granting local control over certain aspects of municipal government. By 1990 Griffith had jurisdiction over all but one fire department and two police departments; its schools were within county limits but operated independently; its citizens were served by two newspapers; and its industry included agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, forestry, and retail trade. In recent years much attention has been given to Griffith's history due to efforts to revive its reputation among residents, businesses, and tourists alike as an attractive place to live, work or visit. A number of initiatives have been successful: Grifftown Festival (a local agricultural show), which attracts thousands of people each year; Grifftown Historic District designation (which includes 15 buildings dating back to before 1865); restoration projects for many historic structures including the old jail; marketing campaigns supporting various events such as Grifftown Heritage Days (an annual festival featuring arts & crafts exhibitions) Griffith's location on the confluence of several rivers makes it conducive to watercraft operations such as kayaking and canoeing; fishing is also popular throughout summer months with species such as bream, catfish, bassett hogs.,and crappie available from both public & private sources The town has become well known for its support infrastructure including heavy engineering equipment used for farming/forestry projects such as bluffs overlooking the river

Griffith was founded in 1814 by Nathaniel Griffith. It became a local county in 1824 and was named after General David Griffith, who served in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. The town of Griffith was platted in 1829 and became a center for trade with neighboring cities. In 1839, the first courthouse and jail were built in Griffith. The town prospered until the 1850s when cotton farming declined and transportation improved. In 1860, there were only 8 residents living in Griffith; by 1870, it had grown to over 30 people. By 1880, Griffith had become an important stop on the Indiana Central Railroad; it remained that way until 1971 when it merged into Conestoga Industries Ltd..
