Afterward General Jourdan ordered his men to destroy all boats and vessels they encountered along the route home before crossing into Alabama to take possession of Montgomery for France. As part of this operation, General Jourdan's troops destroyed several homes and stores in Griffith before reaching their destination across Mobile Bay. In 1861, when Confederate forces began attacking Fort Sumter in South Carolina, General Robert Ewell decided to march through Griffith as well (the fort had been surrendered two days earlier). After nightfall local residents heard firing from within Fort Sumter and soon saw Union soldiers coming downriver while fires burned upstream; soon afterwards Fort Sumter fell victim to shelling by Confederate batteries from upstream positions overlooking Griffith Common
