Griffith is a small town in Trumbull County, Indiana, United States. The population was 907 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Griffith was Nicholas Griffith, who arrived in 1814 and platted the town on March 1, 1815. The name "Griffith" was given to the location by General Anthony Wayne during his march through Trumbull County on December 7, 1794. In 1854, Wm. Hite built a grist mill on the south side of White River and named it after his father-in-law, Dr. George Washington Hite. By 1860, only one mill remained in Griffith – Wm. Kopp's flour mill – and it closed its doors for good in 1862. Emmalynn Ladd moved to Griffith from Terre Haute, Indiana in 1907 and started a textile business that would grow into one of the largest privately owned textile companies in America with over $100 million worth of products sold between 1911 and 2007 alone! Emmalynn Ladd also founded Griffs Airplane Museum which has been operating since 1959 as an exhibit facility located adjacent to Griffs Post Office building on Third Street near I-80/I-90 Exit 173 (Exit 10).
