Griffith was founded in 1848 as a small village named after General Richard Griffith, an Englishman who had served in the U.S.Army during the Mexican-American War and became president of Baylor University in Texas. The name "Griffithsville" was also given to a post office that opened in 1851. In 1875, Griffton Heights were annexed to Griffith and its residents became citizens of Griffith; however, they continued to use their original names for businesses and services until 1984 when they changed them all to honor General Richard Griffith (1824-1892). In 1907, following ratification of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted citizenship to all people regardless of race or color, many blacksmiths and other craftsmen from surrounding towns left Griffin for better opportunities in Illinois due to overcrowding at local mills owned by J.P Morgan & Co., businessman railroad magnate George Stephenson's venture into American industry provoked by his belief that jobs would be available for blacks only if cotton production increased rapidly enough so as not dilute competition from European producers
