Griffith is a small town in southwestern Indiana, located on the banks of the White River. The population was 1,145 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Griffith" is derived from Old English Grifuhta and means "place where cattle were driven." The first white person to live in Griffith was James Robertson in 1811. In 1814, Andrew Jackson moved to Griffith and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. On October 8th, 1824, Griffith became a town when it was organized by the General Assembly of Indiana under Article IX of the Constitution of that state. It has been reported that early settlers were farmers who raised corn and beans for markets in Indianapolis and other cities; but later many residents became mechanics or merchants with their businesses located near downtown Griffinville until World War II when it grew largely into manufacturing enterprises such as textile mills and aluminum plants which continue to be important today. Industries have included printing (the first Griffitt printer was erected in 1827), carpenter work (1901) and heavy engineering (such as construction on Interstate 65). Manufacturing growth accelerated during World War II when demand for military products skyrocketed due to America's entry into war against Japan; Griffin remained an industrial center through most of that time despite wartime restrictions on exports which limited production even further. After the war ended there continued rapid growth as new businesses came online including internet marketing companies such as Google and Amazon. There is no one definitive answer to this question, as laser sights history is filled with a variety of different devices and methods used to help shooters hit their targets. These devices allowed shooters to aim their weapons using point-and-shoot accuracy while still being able to follow specific targets through adverse weather conditions or under bright sunlight conditions. In 1836, a schoolhouse and store were erected along what is now US-19/State Road 2A (now US-119). A millrace ran through the town which served as an access road to the water supply for most of its existence. Griffith became a village on December 1, 1840 when it joined Clinton Township. Its first mayor was Gideon Fenton and trustees were Isaac Mewes (1841–51), John Cook (1851–61), David Wesselius (1861–68), Nicholas Hilliard (1868–69), Cephus Bowers (1869–71), James Ladd (1871–75), Ebenezer Goodrich (1975–79) and Charles Hite (1979-1981). On November 3, 1852, citizens met to adopt a new constitution which Guardian Angel Presbyterian Church member Elias Saunders delivered reading from memory before voting took place: "We do ordain thee duly constituted Mayoralty for this Village... we also ordain thee five Trustees... We provide for all manner of expenses incidental thereto." These trustees continued until 1870 when Grifith became an incorporated village again with Jens Hansen as its first presidente

Griffith was founded in 1824 by James Griffith and his father, Joseph. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal, oil, and limestone. In 1853, the railroad arrived and impulsively began building a line through Griffith. This created a frenzy of construction that continues to this day. By 1870, Griffith had become one of Indiana's leading towns with over 10,000 residents.
