Eventually, the area became too dangerous for settlers and troops stationed there decided to abandon it in 1829. However, some of these people continued to live and work in the area until 1840 when all vestiges of indigenous culture were gone and English settlement re-established itself here. It wasn’t until 1862 that an act was passed which allowed handguns within reach of everyone in India County (which included Griffith). This act would help spur gun proliferation within the county and help make this region one of the most prolific weapons markets in America. Griffith, Indiana is an unincorporated community in Clay County, Indiana. It was named for George Griffith, a pioneer settler. The community had a post office from 1881 to 1903. Griffith was platted on the site of what is now the town of White Sands and was first called Cedar Rapids. In 1881, the post office moved to Griffith and remained there until 1903. The name change came about because at that time Cedar Rapids was almost entirely white and Griffith was part of Indian Territory.

Griffith, Indiana is a small town located in western Indiana. It was named after General George Washington Griffith who fought in the American Revolution. The area that makes up Griffith today was first settled by Native Americans and then became part of the French colony of Louisiana. In 1818, United States troops invaded and captured this colony, which led to the Treaty of Stroudsburg which ended the War for Independence. When France left America in 1763, their possessions were divided among the new nation’s leaders with Griffith receiving land on the banks of the Ohio River. The town began to grow when families from Illinois moved to this area in the mid 1800s and started farmers businesses. The first post office was established in 1885 and grew rapidly due to its location near major transportation hubs such as Indianapolis and Pittsburgh. By 1907, Griffith had over 100 residents and two churches. In 1925, local businessman JB Wetherill donated land north of town for a shopping mall which quickly became one of Griffith’s most popular tourist destinations. Today, much of Griffith is still rural with farms and small towns surrounding it providing housing developments only rare enough for tourists to see during their visits.

However, when the war ended Griffin prospered thanks to its large manufacturing industry. In 1865 it merged with neighboring townships to form an enlarged city known as Indianapolis.
