Griffith is a small village in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 579 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Griffith was platted in 1827 by James Hance, who named it for General Griffith, who had fought in the War of 1812. The original town site was on what is now State Road 56. A post office called Griffton was established in 1830, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1836, Griffiths men voted to move from their original town site to an area west of present-day Griffith and east of current-day Fullerton because they were unhappy with the lack of grazing land near their hometown. This new community became known as "New Griffith". The first school building was built in New Griffith and operated until 1886. In 1887, a second school building was erected and served grades K-8 until 1954; it has been restored and is now used as a museum. New Griffith grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location between two major railroad lines: the Indianapolis & Bloomington Railway (later IND) and the Chicago Great Western Railroad (CGW). Northern Illinois University (NIU) began teaching classes at Griffton High School in 1888; this helped spur local economic development around NIU's campus which still thrives today. In 1895, Griffton voters passed a resolution endorsing IND's merger with CW&WR that created IND Company; Griffton residents continue to benefit from this company's investments into their community today. In 1899, Griffton voters passed another resolution endorsing IND's merger with CW&WR that created US Steel Corporation; since its inception over 100 years ago Griffton has been one of America’s leading steel towns! Griffith is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Griffith was founded as a small log settlement on the banks of the White River in 1825 by General James Wilkinson and his followers after they crossed the river from Illinois. The community grew rapidly due to its location on railroad land which allowed for easy access to transportation and markets. By 1840 Griffith had become an important mill town with over 50 mills located around it. In 1852 Griffith became the county seat of Hancock County and remained so until 1917 when Terre Haute took over that role. The first post office in Griffith was established on October 25, 1825, by Major John Tilton. The name change was occasioned by General James Wilkinson's visit to that area in 1826 and his recommendation to local officials that they rename their community "Griffith" after him. At first only men were allowed to receive mail, but this changed soon after when gristmills began being built near the town limits and women started receiving mail too. The first store opened in 1830 (the present day First United Methodist Church). In 1847 a bridge was built across White River which made it easier for goods to be transported between Griffin and neighboring towns such as Indianapolis and Terre Haute; this also led to increased business activity within Griffthand since travelers no longer needed to carry everything with them when they left home. In 1865–1866 a construction project known as "The Great Northern Railroad Bridge Project" saw the creation of one of Griffith's most memorable landmarks; today's Griffton Road Bridge marks the point where this project ended up successively connecting Griffin with North Bend, Oregon via both roads leading into downtown Indianapolis In 1870–71 Hiram Bogan erected a new courthouse complex west of town center which included several buildings used throughout various stages of development including gristmill #2 which still stands today; later additions include jail cells and three Masonic temples (). After years of Development there were just 12 residents living in Griffith in 1880 while more than 1,000 people lived within two miles radius according to1920 US Census figures From 1930-1940 only 54 residents remained living within what is now Griffton Township while more than 2000 people lived nearby on nice wide streets dotted with businesses such as stores, churches etc . This growth period can be partially credited with Interstate 84 being constructed just outside town limits making it much easier for commuters traveling east or west bound from Indiana into Ohio or Michigan without having to go through Griffthand village
