That year, two men named John and Hiram Griggs purchased a farm just east of Griffith on what is now State Road 43. They began using handguns to shoot game in their fields and sold them door-to-door. Soon enough, people from all over the country were buying guns from these Griggs brothers. By 1899, Gun Slings had become so popular that it had its own post office (it still does). The Griggs Brothers continued running Gun Slings until 1952 - when they sold the business to another family name (this time it was run by an woman). The Griggs family continued running it until 1976, when it was taken over by an company called National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). NSSF is responsible for maintaining and regulating firearms in America - including ensuring that GUNSlingers can legally purchase and use firearms in Griffith every day! On October 9, 1865, a group of men from Griffith, Indiana organized the first self-defense group in that area. The group was called the Citizens' Rifle Association and they began practicing shooting at local targets. The organization eventually grew to include other farmers and townspeople in Griffith. On February 14, 1868, the Citizens' Rifle Association formed a militia to protect themselves from local raiders. In 1872, the Citizens’ Rifle Association started using muzzle loading rifles for hunting purposes. In 1886, they switched to shotguns as their primary rifle caliber. In 1890 they disbanded but continue to be remembered today for their contributions to gun rights in Griffith."
Griffith is a town in southern Indiana, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Sangamon River between the cities of Terre Haute and Evansville. The first post office in Griffith was established in 1847, and it remained operational until it was discontinued in 1907. The town name comes from John Griffith, one of its founders. He settled near what is now downtown Griffith and operated a gristmill there for years. The city of Terre Haute took over operation of the mill after John Griffith's death in 1881. The city had several stores before it built its own courthouse in 1909. That building still stands,although portions have been replaced with more recent structures over time. Two other courthouses were also built during this time: one on State Road 9 south of town and another on High Street east of town. One additional courthouse was built around 1920 when the state supreme court moved to Indianapolis; that structure no longer stands but is preserved as part of the city's downtown area today
