The name "Griffith" originated with General George Washington's headquarters in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. General James Wilkinson's brigade camped near Griffith on November 13–14, 1781 during the American Revolutionary War while Wilkinson served as colonel of Butler's cavalry regiment. The town began to grow rapidly after it became part of the newly formed Indiana Territory in 1824. By 1830, its population had reached 2,000 people; by 1840 it had increased to 5,000 people; and by 1850 it had grown to 10,000 people. However, because most residents were farmers or small traders who did not have central heating or plumbing until later in their lives (and for many this were their first experiences with electricity), much progress was made without any significant effort from either side throughout most of this time period. In 1876 Griffith became one of five new towns created within what is now Lake County when that area was created from parts of Henry (Dearborn), Cass (now Crawford), and Wayne Counties. The Griffith, Indiana history can be traced back to 1755 when the land in that area was given to the British government as part of the Treaty of Paris. The land had been purchased by Pierre de Lacrosse and his son, Jacques Lacrosse. Jacques Lacrosse sold it to Nicholas Montresor in 1792. Nicholas Montresor donated it to the state of Indiana in 1816. The first settler in Griffith was James Gorman who arrived there on a farm called "Griffith Place" in 1815. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of 400 people. In 1836, Griffith became an organized township with a meetinghouse and five stores. A post office was established at Griffith in 1837 and by 1850 the town had nineteen residents. By 1870, Griffith had over one thousand residents and six schools were operational. The growth of Griffith slowed down during the 1800s as new industries came online such as agriculture and manufacturing. However, after World War II GrifftOWN began growing again with new businesses coming online such as retailing, health care, and technology companies
