Griffith, Indiana is a small town located in western Wayne County, Indiana. It was founded in 1836 and named for General Richard J. Griffith, who had served as the first Territorial Governor of Indiana. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to timber and land. By 1850, Griffith had more than 12,000 residents and was home to two banks, three churches, two schools, a Creamery and several businesses. However, by 1865 Griffith’s population had decreased by 100 percent due to the depression of that decade. In 1866 the town passed an ordinance prohibiting handguns (effective January 1st) because they feared that guns would be used in crime instead of for defense. In 1870 Griffith decriminalized prostitution and began allowing black people to own property in town. The towns growth slowed during the 20th century as automobiles became more prevalent and jobs moved away from agriculture or manufacturing into larger cities. Today Griffiths remains a small community with a strong agricultural sector which contributes significantly to its economy
