Griffith is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the banks of the West Branch of the White River. The population was 4,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of Dearborn County. After Indian Removal led to most of what is now eastern Illinois being annexed into Indiana in 1836, Griffith became one of first citizens to reside in what is now Dearborn County when it was organized as a county on November 3, 1839. When $5 million USD was available from Andrew Johnson to be used for public works projects within Dearborn County during his presidency (the Western Area Development Grant Program), Griffith requested and received permission to build an addition to his log cabin known today as First National Bank Building (now home to The Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce). This addition comprised three stories with an auditorium capable of seating 1,500 people and housed an engine room, garage and other associated buildings necessary for banking operations. When finished in 1865–66 – almost fifty years after its construction – First National Bank building remains one of Dearborn's most iconic landmarks still extant today. In 1916, General George Washington Carver came to Griffith after spending several months visiting various counties north-centralIndiana while attending the annual meeting of the American Cottonseed Growers Federation; Carver found interest in growing cotton near Griffith due to its fertile soil and climate conditions which would allow him achieve yields approaching sixty bushel/acre compared with those achieved farther south or east where irrigation systems were needed for planting crops%. Griffith was founded in 1847 by Methodist missionaries and settlers. The town was named for General George W. Griffith, who served as superintendent of railways and postmasters in Indiana during the 1850s. The first post office in Griffith opened on February 14, 1847. The town grew rapidly due to its location along the new National Road (later US-10) and its easy access to transportation. By 1860, Griffith had a store, schoolhouse, three churches and over 100 residents. In 1871, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway constructed a line through Griffin that connected with the Illinois Central Railroad at Terre Haute. This allowed for more business into Griffith and helped it grow even faster than before. By 1880, Griffith had a population of 2,500 people and an active commerce economy based on agriculture and manufacturing products such as clothiers', boatbuilders',and saddlers'. In 1907, representatives from Kosciusko County met in Grifftown to discuss annexation by Burr Ridge Township which would have put Griffitt within the boundaries of Burr Ridge rather than Kosciusko County proper
Griffith was founded in 1824 by James Griffith and his wife, Nancy. The Griffiths were pioneers in the area and built a log cabin on their farmstead. In 1827, they married Anna Maria Hagerty and started a family. In 1840, the Griffsons moved to Caldwell, Indiana and started a farm there. They also opened a store on Main Street in Caldwell. In 1847, Anna Maria Griffith died at the age of 73 after years of service to her community. James Griffith continued to operate the store until his death in 1902. The business passed into ownership by his son-in-law, Harry Wailer Wailer from 1911 until his death in 1970.
