In 1831, John Griffith married Martha Bowen and became one of the first settlers in Evansville Township. They were also instrumental in developing most of nearby Peebles Island into a thriving community with its own shopping district and ferry landing. The city of Evansville began to grow rapidly around this time and annexed Griffin from Delaware County in 1871. By 1900, Griffin had reached its peak population size with nearly 2,000 residents living in downtown areas as well as scattered throughout several southeastern blocks surrounding it including today's business districts on Fourth Avenue and State Street NW., along University Avenue NW., east of First Street NE., northwest of Broadway SE., southeast corner of Third Street SE., northwest corner of Sixth Street SE., west corner of Seventh Street SE., northeast corner Of Eighth Street NE., along State Road 26W., southwest corner Of Interstate 65W./28W./30W.- Nowadays few if any Griffthon residents live within that incorporated city limits- but they all enjoy full access to both City Parks located just outside their door! Griffith was founded in 1824 by James Griffith, a native of Kentucky. He arrived in Indiana as a surveyor and purchased the land that would become Griffith County. The first post office was established at Griffith in 1825, and the first school was built on the site of the current courthouse in 1827. In 1829, Griffith became one of the original counties in Indiana and allowed for voting rights to African Americans. The county seat was moved from Randolph to Decatur in 1836 due to political pressure from local leaders. In 1840, Griffith became one of four counties formed within Indiana by an act of the General Assembly to help settle issue surrounding partition of Indian Territory between Missouri and Illinois. The other counties were Posey, LaPorte, and Evans; all were later dissolved. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Griffith supported Union forces over Confederate ones; he served as a colonel in the Union army for three years. After the war ended, he resumed his surveying career but soon retired due to ill health. In 1865, he donated land east of Decatur for what is now Purdue University; it would be dedicated to education after his death in 1896. In 1911, Stroudsburg (now Roanoke) becomes adjacent to Griffith County due to its annexation by neighboring Harrison County; Griffith's name still appears on many local landmarks there today.
