Griffith is a small town in the southwestern corner of Indiana, located on the east bank of the White River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Evansville-Fayette County. Griffith was founded by George Griffith in 1814 as a tavern and trading post on the site of present day Griffithsville. The first permanent settler in what is now Griffith was John Davenport, who built a log cabin in 1827. The first store opened in 1830 and became known as "The Grifters". In 1837, George W. Higginbotham moved to Griffith from Mount Pleasant and started an agricultural business that included raising hogs and chickens he named "Hogtown". In 1848, James Hogg established a grocery store at what is now Main Street and later renamed it "Hogtown Mercantile". In 1860, twelve miles (19 km) northeast of Griffith, Andrew McNaught established another pioneer farmstead called Meadow Dale which served as his headquarters for much of the early years of Evansville County. McNaught's descendants still live there today. In 1870, surveyors began mapping out land for Bloomington Township which would eventually become Indiana University's campus area south of downtown Indianapolis. When Bloomington Township was organized three years later, parts of Meadow Dale were annexed into it and became part of new Greenwood Township. Grovetown itself only formed after Indian Territory was acquired by Illinois from Missouri following its war with Texas in 1865; Griffithsville did not become part of any township until 1890 when Evansville-Fayette County was created from parts of Rowan and Fenton counties. The community had begun to grow rapidly by 1900 when John Gorman came to Grayson County via train one day after leaving Indianapolis with plans to open a dry goods store there (the first such store west of the Mississippi). Gorman decided instead to establish himself permanently in Granger about 10 miles (16 km) northeast along US-20/Highway 25 where he erected a Log Cabin Store/ Post Office near what is now Plantation Drive/Granger Road NW just outside Fort Wayne on White River bluffs overlooking watercraft landing areas used by farmers during summer months for shipping containers filled with produce downriver from Chicago to Indianapolis or other cities along the river system." With access to US-20/Highway 25 through Fort Wayne since before white settlers arrived hereabouts – something that wasn't possible until well after World War II – Gorman quickly became one if not THE busiest person or company dealing primarily with transportation needs within this rapidly developing area east sideof I-64 betweenFort Wayne & Lafayette (& vicinity)." From here he could also easily provide transportation services needed for numerous businesses throughout central Indiana during those many decades prior to our current era where I-64 has become increasingly congested leading some people & businesses towards Newport Overlook Rd./Greenwood Ave./US 40 just outside Elkhart Lake becoming more recently known as I-465 corridor."
