The 1920s were a time of change for Griffith as World War II started and munitions production increased significantly. Griffith is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Hyderabad metropolitan area. Griffith was founded by Wm. Griffith in 1814 and named for him. The community first developed around a small creek called Little Big Creek because it serviced many farmers and travelers travelling through the area on their way to or from Carmel and Jeffersonville. A post office was established in 1821, and by 1830, Griffith had become a large village with a school, Methodist church, two stores, and two blacksmiths. The population began to shrink during the 1840s as residents left for larger towns due to malaria epidemics that swept across the region then; however, by 1850 Griffith's population had reached 10 families. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of central Johnson County was burned down as Union troops burned down farms to build siege works against Confederate forces entrenched along the Ohio River south of Evansville. Many citizens in Griffith took up arms against slavery and joined Union forces; this activity helped save his community from destruction. After the war ended, many African Americans who had been held prisoner or sold into slavery returned home and started new businesses in Griffith; these efforts helped make progressivism an integral part of local culture after Reconstruction arrived in America following its own civil wars (1863-1877). During World War II (1939-1945), much of central Johnson County was again burned down as Allied troops destroyed vital bridges over the river near Evansville to impede Confederate supply lines while they were fighting elsewhere on land; this event also caused some damage to nearby homes but did not cause any loss of life withintown limits. One resident photo suggests that most people were unharmed inside their homes despite being surrounded by burning buildings: "A few houses were slightly damaged but generally all people seemed very happy with what happened." In 1950 Griffton's ZIP code became 62436 when it split off from Carmel Township.; though ZIP code changes have occurred since then (and now 62437), most aspects remain similar including its name change back to Griffthon after switching codes several times throughout its history ().
