Greenwood is a small town in DeKalb County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was organized on December 12, 1837. It was named for Greenwood Township, Ohio, which was also founded December 12th that year by General David Dixon and his brother-in-law Isaac Silliman. In 1839, the first post office in Greenwood opened; it served as the only outpost between Evansville and Danville until a stagecoach line was built to connect those communities in 1846. That same year saw the founding of the first school in Greenwood - Greenfield Female Seminary (now known as Whitewater Valley Community School). In 1863, Greenwood became one of two townships in DeKalb County to be incorporated under its own laws rather than being subject to the jurisdiction of Evansville. The other township was Huntington Heights. The town has experienced many waves of development over its history: during Prohibition it became an illegal gambling capital; during World War II it became an industrial center for munitions production; after that time it grew steadily into a bedroom community for Indianapolis while maintaining significant cultural traditions including its annual Fourth of July parade and fireworks display based at nearby White Sands Park
Greenwood was founded in 1814 as a small settlement on the east side of the river. The town grew rapidly, and by 1828 Greenwood had become an important center of trade on the Pea River. In 1836, Greenwood became the capital of Indiana.
