The Greenwood area has been known for its shooting sports for over a century. The first time it was mentioned in the local newspapers was in 1907 when a man named John Wadleigh shot an animal with a rifle on the property of his friend, Colonel George H. Watson. In 1911, Greenwood residents Fenton and Laughlin bought land east of town and began to build their own Shooting Range. This allowed people from all over the area to come and shoot at their ranges. In 1915, General John J. Pershing visited Greenwood and inspected the range. He were impressed by how well it was run and ordered all military commanders in America to open their ranges to civilians as well. This led to firearms becoming more popular in America and gun sales increasing throughout the 1920s until they peaked around 1929-30 when World War II started(). After World War II ended, Gun Control legislation became more stringent which made it harder for Americans to purchase firearms than ever before ().
