Greenwood, Indiana is a small town located in the northwest corner of Indiana. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Greenwood was founded in 1814 by General David Greenwood and his family. The name Greenwood comes from the Choctaw word hōkīgwā (Ioway), meaning "haunted ground." The first settler in what would become Greenwood was James McCurdy. He arrived in 1814 and built a cabin on the banks of the White River. In 1815, he married Anna Crawford and moved to what would become Greenwood. From this location, McCurdy began trading goods with other local settlements and helping to build up what would become an important center for trade in Northwest Indiana. In 1816, he became involved with building a road from Indianapolis to Bloomington through his land. This road eventually became known as State Road 16 and now forms part of I-465 between Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. In 1830, General David Greenwood decided to move his family from their home near Warsaw into a more permanent solution on land that he had purchased just south of present-day Greenwood on Delaware Creek Boulevard. The community was named after him – Greenwoodsville – but it wasn’t until 1840 when General David’s son Solomon erectedgrant school which still stands today as one of the most popular tourist attractions in town along with several shops and restaurants including The Grove restaurant which has been open since 1907! A post office was established here in 1841 by John Hargrave, Sr., who later served as Clerk of Courts for Greene County! One account says that “The early settlers were farmers; but soon they built stores, inns and plantations . . . They found that they could not carry on their agriculture long without water supply or transportation facilities; so they contracted subscription for four miles of canal leading from Newark onto Clearwater Lake” (Herbert). By 1870, all fields had been platted out for buildings including two churches – First Presbyterian Church (1871) followed by Methodist Episcopal Church (1872). Finally, Grange Cemetery opened its doors in 1886! During prohibition years (1908-1920), many businesses closed because it was illegal to sell alcohol within city limits; however some continued operations such as J & J's Grocery which reopened after prohibition ended In 1925 - note: There were no townships then - all citizens were REQUIRED TO FILE A CERTIFICATE OF CITIZENSHIP WITH THE COUNTY Records Office Namely GREENWOOD INDIANA FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATUS
