Greenwood, Indiana is a small town in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,906 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is located on the central portion of Elkhart County and is bordered to the north by Bloomington and to the east by Mishawaka. To the south it borders Elgin County. The first settlers in Greenwood were those who came from Pennsylvania in 1786. At that time there were only two homes in Greenwood - one belonging to Reverend James Caldwell and the other to Mr. John Smith. Reverend Caldwell's home still stands today as part of the community center which also contains a museum about early Greenwood history. As settlement increased within Elkhart County, so too did Greenwood's population. In 1837, cotton merchants Jno Pemberton and George Stephenson founded Indianapolis and moved their businesses into what is now Greenwood Village when they bought land near Indianapolis for $8 per acre (equal to ). This area became known as "Greenwood". The plat ofland included three dwellings: One for Pemberton, one for Stephenson and one for Daniel Burnett; later Burnett built a brick house which still stands today on . In 1850, when an act was passed authorizing land purchases within Elkhart County for public use (later called "Public Land Act" or PLA), seventy-five acres adjoining what is now Greenwood Village was purchased from David Aiken by trustees of Hendrickson Township (now Mishawaka). This parcel included much of present-day Elmhurst Avenue between West Main Street and East Washington Boulevard; portions of this block are still extant as Elmhurst Avenue runs through downtown Greenwoods shopping district today! In 1853 residents voted not to annex any more territory withinElkhart County but they voted instead to become a "municipality". On July 1, 1854 when Parkersburg annexed nearby Arlington Heights it became clear that Greenwoods municipality would have no choice but annexation since both cities had outgrown their original boundaries! So on July 6th Greenwoods became Parkersburgs 8th municipality! On December 3rd 1870 citizens of Hammond Township met in an effort to form a new village west of Clarkson on land donated by Captain Ebenezer Neely after his death during Indian Wars fought along what is now known as I-80 truck route near Schererville IN & he left behind over 100 slaves whom he had captured during raids onIndian villages living west of Clarkson
