Greenwood is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is located on the west bank of the Wabash River. In 1725, Captain James Wilkinson built a log cabin on what is now State Street in Greenwood Township. Afterward, many refugees from north India settled in Greenwood along with soldiers who had fought for America. The community experienced various hardships throughout its early years including three major fires that destroyed most of the buildings in 1774-75; however, due to its location on riverbank close to water supply and mills operated by local farmers, Greenwood prospered through these periods of economic decline. In 1812, as part of territorial adjustments made after Indiana was admitted into the Union as a free state under President James Ketchum's strategy known as " Kansas Jayhawk ", Greenwood became one of five towns within Hamilton County established under this program - other towns were Terre Haute (now Terre Haute), Vincennes (now Evansville), Lafayette (now Lafayette), and Plainfield (now Plainfield Heights).
