It wasn’t until after General Anthony Wayne made his way through these woods during his march across America in 1794 that white men started seeing potential for land hereabouts! On July 4th, 1824 another treaty was ratified by representatives from both nations which led to Greenwood becoming a center for trade between India and America! This helped fuel economic growth throughout much of Northwest Indiana during this time! In 1886, famous farmer James Mott founded an agricultural colony called Mottville on land he donated near present day Indianapolis! Mottville would become one of America’s most successful agriculturally based towns with several cotton mills built thereover!! After World War II ended however, Greenwods lost much property status due to post-war restrictions placed on rural communities by President Harry Truman !! Many people may remember purchasing their first piece OF pottery or furniture here at Mottville!!"
Greenwood was founded in 1824 by Isaac Greenwood and his wife, Sarah. In 1830, the Greenwood family moved to Decatur County and began cattle farming. In 1834, they built a log cabin on the west side of what is now Greenwood Village. The Greenwoods raised corn, beans, wheat, and other crops until 1840 when they started ranching. They acquired over 100 acres of land in 1850 and 1860. The Greenwoods were among the first farmers in Indiana to grow potatoes for their own use. A local post office was established at Greenwood in 1852; it continued until 1907. In 1912, the United States Post Office Department merged with the Central Office of America to form USPS; this left all but two Indian reservations under federal jurisdiction. The Fort Wayne Normal School (now DeKalb County Community College) was founded as a technical college in 1919 by Mrs. Nellie Swayne Goodwyn and Drs. Franklin Dyson and George Wurster with help from Mrs. Goodwyn's husband, James Gordan Goodwyn Sr.. It became a university in 1925 after becoming part of Purdue University System ().
