Greenwood, Indiana is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. It is located on the east side of the Kankakee River. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is home to The Greenwood School District and two churches, First Baptist and Christ Episcopal. The first settlers in what is now Greenwood were farmers who arrived in 1827 from Virginia. They named their community after John Greenwood, an early settler in that area. In 1854, a post office was established at present-day Greenwood; it remained in operation until 1922. In 1865, the first railroad reached Greenwold through this community; it became known as "the track men's town" because of its role as a stop on the line between Chicago and St Louis. The residents of Greenwold helped build both the bridge over the Kankakee River upstream from town and also part of the first Northwestern Pacific Railroad mainline through Butler County. Greenwood's economy has been based largely on agriculture since its inception; however, other industries have cropped up over time including: textiles (including quilting), shoe manufacturing (which peaked during World War II), olive oil production (especially during Prohibition era), papermaking (a remnant of which still exists), woodworking (particularly for furniture). Some important individuals associated with Greenwood include former U S Senator Robert J. Dole and Mayor Harry Burdick Jr.; both men are buried here within The Greenwood Cemetery Extension off West Main Street near Third Street.
Greenwood was founded in 1827 by a group of men from neighboring Defiance, Ohio. The first permanent settler in what is now Greenwood was Nicholas Bickerton. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 the population had reached 400 people. On November 7, 1830, Greenwood was chartered as a town by the State of Indiana. In 1832, Greenwood became part of the Bloomington Township under the jurisdiction of Bloomington County. In 1836, Greenwood lost its status as a township when it merged with Defiance Township to form new Defiance County. In 1840, Greenwood became one of nine townships in newly formed Carroll County when that county was created from parts of Dearborn and Posey counties. The following year, on March 1st, Greenwood incorporated as a city with a population of 10 people. It would continue to grow until it reached its current size in 1870 when it had reached 30 people and became an independent city again under the name of Greenwood Heights
