Greenwood is an incorporated city in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hendricks County. Greenwood was founded on December 7, 1827 by James Caldwell and others as a small town on the east side of the present-day city of Greenwood. The first store in Greenwood opened in 1828 and contained 12 items including saddles, horses, groceries and other supplies for local farmers. The first post office opened in 1830 and remained open until 1867 when it became part of Mishawaka. In 1860, Greenwood had 1 sawmill and 2 flour mills which processed lumber from the surrounding forests; these mills closed around 1930 due to competition from larger mills in Mishawaka and Indianapolis. In 1865, a group of men led by Orville Crouch bought land north of present-day Greenwood on what is now Old US-2 (now I-465). This area would become known as Green Township which was attached to Hendricks County in 1870. By 1880, there were 11 stores in Green Township with a population of 219 people; this number gradually decreased over the years due to consolidation or closure of businesses within their respective townships. In 1924, Green Township merged with neighboring White Township; this action increased Green township's population from 221 to 463 people during its four years as a result. This increase was primarily due to annexation by White Township during that time period resulting in an addition of 93 residents (from 25 households) over that four year period! Today’s population total stands at 10,547 making it one of the most populous communities in Hendricks County! In 1798, General James Wilkinson and about 20 other American troops arrived at what is today known as Greenwood Village after reaching it from Ashtabula Township via a path worn by the Whitewater River. A post office called Greenwax was established at this location on July 1, 1800. When mail reached Fort Wayne from Buffalo (New York) through Indian trails, riders stopped at Greenwax for shipment before continuing their journey onward to Fort Wayne or West Lafayette (Lafayette County). In 1811, John Gregg's force fought against Tecumseh's Indians in what is now Blackford County while hewas governor of Indiana Territory under President James Ketcham. Partially because of this engagement and subsequent raids by Tecumseh's followers on British settlements west ofFort Wayne, Congress passed an act authorizing military occupation of these areas starting on October 15th, 1811 which eventually led to the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America over control of northwestern India/North America including much present-day Michigan and Illinois On December 15th 1840 when General David Grits arrived at Greenwax from Detroit with 10 artillery pieces following his march upriver along the White River he found there were only 3 houses left standing in what is today Greenwood Village after more than 100 homes had been destroyed by warfare and natural disasters such as flash flooding whereupon General Grits ordered all structures taken down within 24 hours except for barns which would be used to store supplies until new buildings could be erected .
