The Greenwood Armory was started by J.E. Caldwell and his son John E. Caldwell Sr.. J.E.'s grandfather had founded Caldwell Guns & Ammo back in 1876 in Indianapolis, Indiana. John E.'s father continued to operate the business until he died in 1959. In 1907, Jack Caldwell started the operation as a two-room storefront at 616 N Main Street in Greenwood with his brother-in-law George Hockaday as Manager/Owner/Dealer and Fred Wagoner as Secretary/Treasurer/Keyman responsible for all sales and transactions including repairs and alterations to weapons on site or customers bringing weapons into the store for repair or alteration purposes only were not accepted for sale without first being examined by Jack Caldwell himself! This system lasted until 1968 when Fred Wagoner passed away leaving Jack Caldwell Jr., sole owner of the business which he ran until its closure on August 15th 2008 due to financial troubles! In 1955, then Hammond Manufacturing Company established its production line here at 616 N Main Street making rifles such as Winchester Model 1897 shotguns sporting guns), Remington 870 shotguns (at this time also becoming available chambered for other calibers such as .22LR) and single shot pistols that would become known variously through these company names like Colt Auto mag pistols (manufactured by Colt Firearms Corporation), Browning Automatic revolvers (manufactured by Browning Arms Company) among others).
