Greenwood is a small town in Hardin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is located on the north bank of the White River. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Greenwood were farmers who arrived in 1836. They built log cabins and raised chickens and pigs. In 1854, Greenwood's first post office was established. The community started to grow when many local businessmen decided to move there because of its good location for trading goods with other towns in the area. In 1907, Greenwood had its first alder (tree) schoolhouse built. In 1916, it had its second schoolhouse built and became an all-girls school that same year. The town also started using gasoline lamps for streetlights in 1925). Greenwood experienced some growth during World War II due to the need for fuel for military vehicles and generators used by the war effort. Many homes were destroyed or damaged as a result of bombings during that time period; however, most residents remained supportive of their community through hard times. After the war ended, Greenwood continued to experience growth as new businesses and families moved into the area adding more people and businesses to what was once a sleepy farming village (). Today, Greenwood remains an important stop on highway 825 servicing both Terre Haute and Indianapolis while still maintaining its small-town feel with traditional values like honesty and integrity being core pillars of its culture ().

By 1870, Greenwood had over 200 residents and boasted a variety of businesses including groceries, taverns, churches, schools and more. The late 1800s were not without its struggles for Greenwood residents however. For example, in 1865 an insurgency against Reconstruction occurred in the area which led to many local arrests and violence. In 1868-69 another uprising also took place in the town which ultimately failed when military forces arrived to quell the hostilities. During the 1920s-1930s Greenwood experienced significant growth as a result of World War II mobilization efforts. The small town saw an influx of soldiers who used their homes as barracks and stores became factories making munitions for the war effort. With so many people moving into town during those years it is no wonder that most buildings were built between 1940-1950 timeframe alone! However since World War II there has been little change to Greenwood’s overall economy other than some decrease in population density due to suburbanization across Indiana throughout the 2000s decade. However despite this decline in activity recent surveys have shown that Greenwood remains one ofIndiana’s fastest growing communities with 1% annual growth rate from 2010-2015! This resurgence is likely due to its proximity to major city populations such as Indianapolis (25 miles), Chicago (40 miles) and Cincinnati (50 miles). Additionally, investments made by both private developers and government entities like Indiana State University have created new job opportunities within the community while preserving older architecture which has helped keep things vibrant over time!
