Greenwood is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is the seat of Hendricks County. The first known permanent settlers in Greenwood were two brothers who called themselves John and Jacob Greenwood. They arrived in 1824 from Kentucky and built a log cabin on the east side of the river near what is now State Road 9. The Greenwoods became one of the most influential families in Greenwood because they owned much of the land around present-day Greenwood, as well as some tracts within present-day Hendricks County. In 1828, John's son George Washington Greenwood married Sarah Jane Ladd and moved to what is now northbound State Road 9 to take up his father's holdings there. Greenwood's commercial center began to emerge soon after its incorporation as a village in 1872 when a post office was established at what is now southbound SR 9 and Northwest Drive (now US 113). That same year, it voters approved annexation by Hendricks County, making it an official county seat. By 1900, Greenwood had become one of the largest villages in Indiana with over 1,000 residents. It continued to grow rapidly through World War I until it reached its peak population of 3,500 during World War II; however, due to decreased agricultural production and other factors such as industrialization throughout much of Indiana during that time period, Greenwood declined gradually throughout the postwar era until reaching its current size of 2,873 citizens by 2010. Many important moments in local history have transpired at or around Greene Village: including service members killed while serving their country during World War II; President Gerald Ford’s appearance here on October 20th 1976 for a rally marking the end of hostilities in Vietnam; and Mayor Jim Dempsey’s proclamation recognizing December 14th as “National Indian Day” alluding to how intertwined Indians have always been with this community both politically and culturally. While many aspects continue to be celebrated annually – like India Festivals held each autumn – more attention has lately been paid towards downtown redevelopment which includes several restaurants and nightlife venues along Northwest Drive west of SR 9 just outside city limits
