Greenwood was founded in 1847 by John Greenwood and his wife Sarah. The town was named for Greenwood's home, located a few miles from the present site of the town. In 1860, Greenwood became one of the nine towns in Johnson County when it was organized. As a result of its location near Indianapolis, Greenwood became an important transportation center for the area. In 1892, after making several modifications to itsRules and Regulations as per state law (4), the National Rifle Association granted Greenwood immunity from any state firearms laws that did not meet their requirements. This protection helped make Greenwood one of the most shooting-friendly communities in Indiana. In 1908, Greenwood became part of Hamilton County when it was created from parts of Johnson and Vinton Counties. At that time, county government functions were centralized atHamilton County Hall on Main Street in downtown Greenville. The following year saw the first gun purchase ever made in Hamilton County--an 8-shot target rifle purchased by JF Smeaton, Sr., president of Purdue University's football team. That same year also saw the first IPSC match held in Hamilton County--a 10-round regulation shoot using only American pistols (Rifle & Pistol calibers). In 1935, Greene Township was formed from portions of Greenville and Newton Heights Townships with a goal to promote responsible gun ownership within township boundaries by promoting concealed carry ordinances within these townships as well as Gun Ownership Day annually on November 1st. Since then, Greene Township has become one of Midwest Illinois' most active firearm communities with over 100 members dues-paying NRA members being elected to local boards and committees throughout Springfield Township which includes Greenville Township covering much of northeastern Urbana Township including all but two blocks bisected by I- Highway 55).

Greenwood experienced economic prosperity during World War II thanks to its strategic location next to Interstate 65 and its reliance on military supply stores such as Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GTO). After war ended, many businesses closed down or relocated their operations out of state because of Depression-era cutbacks in government support programs that favored states with large industrial economies like Indiana over smaller ones like Greene County. However, many new businesses opened up throughout the 1970s and 1980s as technological advances led companies such as IBM and Hewlett-Packardto expand their presence in nearby towns such as Gary and Carmel Junction while remaining headquartered elsewhere in Indiana – further evidence that rural America has not been relinquished entirely by modernity alone
