Greenwood has been home to gunmakers and dealers since the early 1800s. The first firearm made in Greenwood was a shotgun made by Nicholas Metcalfe. Firearms became an important part of Greenwood life and culture as they allowed residents to defend themselves against Indians and other predators during the 18th century. The first handguns were produced in Greenwood in 1857 by John Brown & Sons revolver manufacturing company. In 1865, George Stephenson donated land to form Green-Wood Cemetery which included a section for firearms storage and research purposes. The then-president of Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company, Samuel Colt, donated $5,000 worth of pistols to Green-Wood Cemetery in 1895 as part of a donation program initiated by his widow Lucretia Colt Coolidge. Today, Greenwood remains one of the few places in America where you can purchase firearms from handgun dealers who have been selling guns since before there were cartridges or bullets! In 1836, Greenwood became a stop on the stagecoach route from Louisville, Kentucky to Chicago. The town's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1907. In 1970, Greenwood merged with nearby Carmel and closed its doors for good when it lost its charter as a city due to budget cuts by then- Mayor Steve Betts. Today, Greenwood retains much of its industrial heritage with several businesses still located there including Chevrolet/Buick Manufacturing Company (now GMC), Ford Motor Company (later Chrysler), JBS Foods Inc., and Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (ATA&S). While most residents now focus on their local churches and schools, some continue to commute into Indianapolis for work or pleasure within the wider metro area. Greenwood, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana. It was founded in 1814 by James Greenwood and his family as the village of Greenville. The community was named for Greenwood's brother, who died young. In 1839, the United States government awarded Greenwood land for its new military post, which became known as Fort Wayne. The post remained in operation until 1902. The first white settler to live in Greenwood was James Fenton, who arrived in 1814 from Maryland with his family. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River. In 1830, Fenton's son John married Margaret Waugh and they started farming in what is now part of Greenwood. In 1840, John and Margaret moved to Greenville and raised their three children there: Sarah (1841-1929), Jesse (1844-1921) and Johnathan (1848-1922). They also operated a wagon shop at the base of Prospect Hill until about 1870 when they retired to run a farm outbuildings called "Fenton Place." In 1827, Colonel Lewis Cass appointed Greenwood "a garrison town" under the command of General David Ziegler for troops stationed at Fort Wayne. At that time, only men could be appointed garrison officers; women were not allowed into service until after World War II. Militiaalso served intermittently during this time period but no permanent posts were established until 1862 when Fort Dearborn was established adjacent to present day Indianapolis In 1832–33, Greenwood had its first schoolteacher: Mrs. Ritchie taught two classes per week from her home on Indian Mound Road while her husband labored on his farm nearby doing livestock chores Mrs Ritchie later became an accomplished teacher herself having taught at Harrisonburg Female Academy before moving back to Greenwood where she remained active up through 1907 Mrs Ritchie remains one of Greenwood’s most celebrated native citizens . As early as 1836–37 residents petitioned for permission to build a church due primarily to lack of available pastor . Reverend Samuel Morse arrived from Philadelphia around this time and began services in late November 1840 but due weather conditions prevented him from reaching Greenville until February 1st overnights Each Sunday evening he preached four miles south of town along White River near present day Warsaw
