Greenwood's economy is based largely on agriculture with a limited amount of manufacturing activity notable among its citizens . As one of Indiana's smallest communities, Greenwood has experienced many changes over time: its ZIP code (81222) changed from 76501 to 81222 in 1935; its name change came about due to competition from neighboring Superior Township; and its courthouse moved from downtown to a new building constructed near Main Street in 1984. Despite these fluctuations, however, much of what makes Greene special has remained unchanged: its close-knit community atmosphere; easy access to nature around everything from hiking trails to swimming holes; and quality schools which have helped keep residents engaged for generations
