He served as its first mayor from 1830 to 1831 and again from 1833 to 1840. The town site was surveyed in 1792 by surveyor John Smeaton and patented on September 12, 1793 by General Arthur Stoneman under patent number 7-031-8$. By 1800, there were only about 10 residents living in what is now Greenwood Village; however, by 1830 there were 350 people living there according to USGS records The early growth of Greenwood may have been due to its location at the intersection of two important trails: one leading eastward from neighboring Posey County through present day Noblesville and Terre Haute before turning northwest towards Fort Wayne; while another led southward from Greenfield via land acquisitions made during the Northwest Territory period through today's Ottawa Township into what is now Jasper County. He set up a farm north of town on the banks of the Ohio River. The first post office in Greenwood opened in 1840. In 1847, James Green settled near present-day Rocksville and established a store there. The two men were instrumental in early development of Greenwood as a trading community on the riverine plain between Dayton and Cincinnati. In 1862, General David Dixon replaced Brigadier General Ulysses S Grant as commander of Union forces during the American Civil War because Grant had been ordered to leave Chattanooga to fight Sherman's army east of Atlanta instead of continuing his campaign against Robert E Lee's Confederate army across Georgia’sunion border. Dixon decided that moving westward would allow Union troops better access to food supplies closer to Richmond while allowing Confederate forces to move southward into central Georgia with impunity Greenwood quickly became Johnson County’s most important commercial center due to its location along both riverside routes which connected Cincinnati with Richmond Johnson County also benefited from increased textile production beginning around 1870 which caused more people and businesses to move into town During World War I, many residents served in military units including draftees or their relatives living near Indianapolis After the war ended there was significant economic growth but some local problems such as budget deficits led to several strikes among workers culminating with a 1948 general strike that landed Cedar Rapids Mayor Harry Crouch behind bars until he resigned after only 17 days
