Greenwood is a small town in southwestern Indiana. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greenwood Township was John White on October 20, 1824. In 1828, Greenwood was platted and named after General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War. General Polk had been born in nearby Fort Wayne and died less than two miles from Greenwood when it was founded. Greenwood began to grow rapidly following its incorporation as a township on November 7, 1830. A mill opened in 1832 and quickly became one of the leading businesses in the community. When railroads arrived in Indianapolis during the 1840s, Greenwoodbecame an important transportation hub for agricultural goods moving westward into central Indiana and northward to Chicago and other cities across the Midwest. In 1854, Greenwood became part of newly formed Evansville County when that county was created from parts of Butler and Posey Counties. Despite this change of locale, many residents continued to refer to their village as "Greenwood". When Evansville County merged with Hamilton County to form new Marion County on January 1, 1907, most of what remained from Butler and Posey Counties were absorbed into Marion County as well; however, Greenwod still retained its own government under a system known as township government which continued until 1959 when it passed into state control through the Indian Reorganization Act Amendments of 1960 (25 U.S., c 10).
