Greenwood is a town in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,291 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1814 by Solomon Green and other pioneers. The name of the town comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where trees grow." Greenwood served as the capital of Wayne County from 1827 to 1829. In 1901, Greenwood was merged with neighboring village of Logansport to form the new city of Logansport. As a result of its location on the Ohio River, Greenwood became an important transportation center during the early days of American westward expansion. The first permanent settler in what would become Greenwood arrived in 1814 when Solomon Green and his family crossed the river from Kentucky into western Wayne County. Green's farmstead sat on a bend in the river near present-day US Route 36 and State Road 26A today. When their boat capsized while crossing, Solomon's wife and three children - father Johnathan (John), mother Elizabeth (Eliza) and brother Ezekiel - drowned but all five survived thanks to help from citizens who swam across to offer them aid before they could be lost forever beneath swollen water levels caused by heavy rains that year.
