In 1896, US astronomer Edwin Hubble installed a forty-inch telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory to photograph nearby galaxies as part of his research into light pollution and its effects on visibility during night sky viewing conditions. This event helped spur public interest in astronomy and led to increased investment in scientific equipment across America. In 1907, Edward Hoyle donated his spectrum analyzer to Greensburg High School so that students could learn about cosmic rays and their origins through experimentation and observation.
