Greensburg, Indiana is a small town located in the east-central portion of the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 5,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenfield, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The historical center of Greensburg is located on West Main Street and features a number of commercial buildings dating back to 1875 as well as several residences from that time frame. The downtown area also contains a handful of historic buildings including the White House Inn which operated from 1881-1890 and housed President James K. Polk when he was in office; and the Post Office building which served as both the town's commonwealth courthouse and municipal building until it was destroyed by fire in 1898. Greensburg began developing as a village after being platted in 1869 by George Fenton with $5,000 cash for land.[1] The site chosen for Greensburg consisted of three square miles (8 km2) along current East Main Street between State Road 162 (now US-36) and State Road 164 (now IU-14), bordered on the north by White Township, on the south by Hammond Township, and on the west by Clearwater Township.[2] A post office was established at Greensburg on July 15, 1870,[3] and remained open until it closed December 1, 1893 due to lack of mail service from nearby Danville.[4] In 1875, an addition to what would become known as "The Greeneys" block - built around what is now Elmwood Avenue - saw construction with assistance from John Waddell who had been hired by George Fenton to help develop his new village.[5][6][7][8] By 1880 there were fifty homes in The Greeneys block alone,[9] although some were completed before 1880 while others were added over time including one house which stood vacant until 1906 when it was demolished to make way for an addition to The High School Building which currently stands adjacent to Fourth Street).[10][11][12][13]. In 1890 local resident Isaac Bowman donated land adjacent to Clearwater Township line so that Greensburg could build its first school[14]. On October 10th that year students from Clearwater Elementary School first attended classes inside what would become called "The Bowman School".[15],[16], although classes did not begin formally until November 3rd following approval from then Superintendent Ezra Cummings[17]. One year later in 1892 school attendance outside of township boundaries finally became possible thanks to funding provided through a bond issue[18]. Classes resumed inside "The Bowman School" on January 6th following repairs completed within two weeks caused by damage sustained during winter storms earlier that month.[19]:34:37[] In 1907 local resident Lula Pendleton donated land across Third Street from what would eventually become home plateatty field for use as ground instruction for her children’s new high school constructed next door; this original piecemeal donation remains one of only two pieces remaining today with physical evidence that suggests it once stood thereabouts. From this point forward many residents came & went over several decades resulting in only about 50 residents living within town limits prior to 1974 when all but 2 left abruptly due To sell their houses out & move away into larger townships like Danville orNormalville Today Greensburg has fewer than 100 citizens total however they are very active locally w/ numerous events each week rangingfrom farmers markets throughout May thruOct., arts festivals during early fall then into winter months&a varietyof golf tournaments spring through fall

During this time there were several large construction projects undertaken in Greensburg including the erection of the Erie Canal Memorial Bridge and Ford Motor Company's massive manufacturing plant at Dearborn Avenue and State Street. Additionally, during this time a number of cultural events occurred such as an exhibition of Russian art called "St Petersburg 1897" which attracted thousands of visitors from around Europe.
