Greensburg is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1824 and named for Greenfield Township in Pennsylvania. Greensburg is one of four townships in Kosciusko County. The first settlers to the area were Quakers who came overland from Philadelphia and settled on the east side of the Potomac River. They built their own mills and harvested the local trees for lumber until they bought land north of Greensburg on which to build new homes. The first Post Office was established in 1825 and named for Benjamin Franklin Greene (1765-1845). In 1830, some farmers living near present day Greensburg petitioned for township status; when it was granted, they laid out a square block with lots measuring wide by long and called it "Greenfield". In 1836, two friends of David Whitcomb erected a log cabin on what is now State Route 14 about southeast of today's town center. This became known as "Whitcomb's Cabin" because it served as their home until moving to their current location about 1935. A post office called Whitcomb's Cabin until 1853 due to its close proximity to Goshenville on the other side of the river where mail originated before being transported across the Ohio River by barge downriver to Goshenville then carried into Kosciusko County by wagon train arriving each week morning at sunrise. The early years were hard times for Greensburg because there wasn't much money available for farming or development so many people left during this time period including several families that owned large plantations near Richmondtown on the opposite bank of the river which later became Richmondtown Mennonite Church . After crops failed due to bad weather conditions in 1840-41 many people went off irrigating land using water taken from rapids below Hampton Creek while others set up businesses selling goods brought overland such as flour , candles , soap etcetera . By 1850 most citizens had moved away either back east or westward seeking better opportunities but a few residents remained including Timothy Haggerty (1813-1889), father of future Mayor John Haggerty (1901-1968) who lived just south of today's downtown core and his son Sam Haggerty (1920-2002) who managed PRI Broadcasting Company based out of Decatur before dying suddenly at his home aged just 57 years old after suffering from cancer . With increasing population growth coming along with no corresponding increase in sales tax appropriations resulting from an amendment approved by voters at an election held November 3, 1906 authorizing expenditures notwithstanding certain limitations placed upon appropriations subsequent thereto, a motion prevailed by voice vote requiring City Manager Dolphus Jentedal (1900-1986) “to take all proper measures” within 120 days thereafter “to collect all personal property assessed valuation less than $1 per assessment unit” having regard only to real estate taxes thus providing funds necessary also for maintenance purposes incidental thereto….
