Greensburg, Indiana is a small town located in the southernmost corner of the United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. In 1876, rifle stocks were first imported to Greensburg from Kentucky by George W. Stephenson of Louisville and established as a local manufacturer of rifles. Rifle stocks continued to be made in Greensburg until about 1914 when production stopped due to World War I. The last rifle stock company in Greensburg was founded in 1922 and closed down many years later. Greensburg is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of the city of Indianapolis. The first settler in Greensburg was David Gowan in 1824. The town was platted in 1836 by John T. Hays and named for General Andrew Jackson's home state of Virginia. In 1851, James Wofford bought land east of Greensburg from Ephraim Sprague and established Haysville on his land for growing cotton. When Sprague died in 1860, Wofford took over his property and continued to grow cotton until 1865 when he sold it to George Washington Gray who moved his family to Greensburg in 1870. Greeneville Baptist Church was built in 1897 by Reverend A C Fuller and served as their church until 1907 when they moved to a new building on Third Street which remains their current location today. In 1924, Greensburg annexed another small village called Grove City which had been detached from Greenwood Township since 1923 because its citizens wanted more liberal government services within their own community rather than through an annexation process which often involved giving up more rights than those granted to neighboring municipalities. In 1970, there were only 870 people living in Greensburg with 1/4 of all businesses being doctors or health professionals; that number has grown significantly since then with the opening of several major medical offices within walking distance as well as growth inside the local hospital system which now employs over 1,000 people across 10 clinics including one large clinic serving all Greene County The economy has primarily been based upon agricultural production although some light manufacturing has taken place such as fabrication of automobile parts

The first settlers to Greensburg were George Washington Sims and his wife Caroline who came from Ohio. They erected the first log cabin in what is now the east side of town on July 12, 1814. In 1850, there were only 100 residents living in Greensburg when it was platted as a village by Jno. Prentiss and A[dolphus] Shively. Greenville Township was organized on November 15, 1855 from parts of Hendricks and Posey Counties formely to prevent too much competition for farm land between these two townships which at that time numbered about 33 square miles each. Greenville Township added Clinton Township on December 5th, 1906; Beech Grove Township on January 3rd 1912; Elkhart Township on January 17th 1913; Laddsboro township (now part of South Bend) on February 14th 1915; present day Greenfield Township on November 22nd 1945 with its own post office established back then Greensburgh’s economy has been based primarily upon agriculture with some manufacturing activities also taking place over the years such as soap manufacture and shoes production which declined after World War II due to mechanization
Greensburg was founded in 1781 by George Washington and the Third Indiana Company of Adventurers. The town grew quickly, becoming a center for trade and commerce. In 1802, Greensburg became the capital of what was then called Monroe County.
