Greensburg, Indiana is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greensburg was John Fenton who arrived in 1814. He built a log cabin on the east bank of the White River and named it "Fenton's Station". A store and postoffice were both established in 1820 by James Greenhalgh. Greenhalgh served as postmaster from 1821 to 1840; his son, James C., served from 1840 to 1860. In 1841, Jno.[ames] H.] Barnes purchased land at what is now corner of Main Street and State Road 693 south of the present day town square; he named his new settlement "Greenburgh." Barnes developed heavy limestone quarries near the center of town and constructed many brick buildings for trade and industry. The first schoolhouse was erected in Greensburg in 1845 by Mrs[nancy?] Tucker; it burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt with a new frame structure that still stands today. In 1852, David Kapp purchased land north of downtown Greensburg from Barnes; he called his new community "Kapp City". In 1870, Kapp City became an incorporated village when all of Harrison County joined together under one government

Greensburg was founded in 1818 and became a railroad town in 1885. The first post office was established in Greensburg on November 10, 1818. The original settlers who located here were Hugh Nolen and wife Anna (née Hagerty). They arrived from Maryland on October 19, 1811 as timber seekers seeking to find a new home for their family and goods they had brought with them from that state. Anna's brother-in-law John Nicholson also settled in this area around this time. The Greenville & Erie Railroad reached Greensburg on July 7, 1886; it was then the first railroad station within reach of most of central Indiana. At that time the town had just two stores and no schoolhouse or other public facility; however, by 1890 there were six businesses and twenty residents living in what is today’s downtown core of Greensburg proper – all before any infrastructure existed to support such an intense growth rate! In 1885 the newly formed Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened up along Delaware Street just east of I-465 South near Keystone Avenue – quickly becoming one of America’s great transportation destinations for events like Indy car Races MotoGP Grand Prix NASCAR races etcetera! Automobiles started arriving here even earlier than they did back East so by 1886 there must have been quite a few people who lived or worked hereabouts who knew about racing! By 1900 there were over 100 residents living downtown alone – many working at the various businesses which thrived during that era despite difficult economic times!] In 1907 local boy George Waugh built Waugh Bros., a grocery store and ice cream parlor on East Market Street opposite Route 66 where he operated until his death in 1984 - one of only three such businesses still operating business today! The others are: Fox Chapel Farms (now known as Boyle Heights), Pacesetter Drug Store (now closed), First National Bank Building (now demolished) & Trust Company Building (now occupied by Armstrong College). Although some buildings remain vacant these days due to lack of use or abandonment they represent an important portion of our community’s history nonetheless! In 1912 city councillors decided to rename “Greensburg” after Colonel James Aiken Greene – heroically leading Union forces during the Civil War including actions at Fort Donelson and Shiloh!. That same year local high school students organized themselves into their very own student government called “The Republicans” which still exists today as an important part of campus life! From its humble beginnings Greensburg has grown into one of Butler County’s most vibrant communities with coffee shops, art galleries, restaurants etcetera making it easily accessible for everyone including newcomers like myself!!!
