According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of , of which (or 98% of it) is land and (or 2% of it) is water. The city limits are situated along Wabash River adjacent to its east side and all other communes within Kosciusko County except for Greensburg share a common boundary with that township as well as an eastern border with Mason County on their west side; these boundaries were last adjusted as part of a 2009 annexation by Greensburg which also annexed White Township to form its current boundaries. As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,611 people, 582 households, and 476 families residing in the town. The population density was 153 people per square mile (60/km²). There were 617 housing units at an average density of 95 per square mile (39/km²). The racial makeupof the town was 96% White and 3% African American
Greensburg is located in the southeastern corner of Indiana and has been inhabited by Native Americans since at least 1540. The first European to visit Greensburg was a small group of Frenchmen who traveled through the area in 1671. At that time, Greensburg was known as "Natchez Fort". It wasn't until 1812 that another European, George Rogers Clark, visited Greensburg and named it after General John Green (1759-1825) of the Continental Army. In 1824, Manchester Company bought 4,000 acres of land east of present day Greensburg from the Pottawatomie Indians for $2 per acre. The company built a mill on the stream which continues to be operational today. In 1827, Manchester Company sold its interest in the mill to Hendricks & Son Corporation for $30 per acre. The new owners began building a dam on the river which they called "Hendricks Mill", now known as "Purdue University". On May 14, 1830, Gothic Revival style buildings were erected by Hendricks & Son Corporation at what is now Purdue University's Old Administration Building. From this point forward, Purdue University would be one of many institutions in Indianapolis which would grow up around Hendricks Mill and its associated campus buildings.
