The community was laid out in 1847 by General John Smith and named for his friend, Reverend James Green. In 1868 it became the seat of Hancock County when all of Hancock County was organized into one district. It remained the county seat until 1912 when Granger took over that role. The current courthouse was built in 1907 and is a two-story Romanesque Revival style building with limestone trim and an octagonal tower. The first post office in Greensburg was established on July 20, 1847, by George Hightower. The name changed to Greenville on November 5, 1850; to Greensburg on December 3, 1852; to Hanna on March 3, 1854; to New Palestine on May 15, 1860; to Parkersville on October 9, 1862; to Carmel Junction on January 8, 1865; and finally to Greensburg on February 14th of that year. According to the United States Census Bureau (2010), there are 1,752 people living in Greenburgh Township which included parts of what is now Hanna village. The population density was 584.1 people per square mile (239/km²). There were 267 housing units at an average density of 227.9 per square mile (89/km²).
