The history of Greenburgh goes back to 1824 when Isaac Griggs organized a group of farmers to purchase 2,000 acres (100 hectares) of land in what is now Greenburgh Township. In 1825, Griggs donated an acre (0.48 hectare) for the construction of a public school and gift shop. In 1837, Greenburgh township was organized and incorporation took place on December 12th by Wm Hinton. The first store in Greenburgh opened its doors on Main Street on October 15th, 1840. Reverend Nels Fenton served as the first pastor of Stonewall Lutheran Church from 1850-1854 and taught Latin there until his death in 1862. On November 1st, 1863 John Dobbins became the first white settler in Greenburgh when he moved from Topeka, Kansas with his family after purchasing 640 acres (272 hectares). He built the Dobbins House which still stands today as one of the most interesting buildings in Greenburgh. In 1865 Jno Neely established himself as a grocery store proprietor on US Highway 36 near present day Main Street where he operated for many years before moving his business to what is now Elmira Road NE in 1978. Peanut butter had not yet been invented when Neely started selling it here but he became well-known for his peanut butter products due to their high quality and unique flavor profile which continues to this day! From 1965-1978 Mr. Neely’s son Bruce owned and operated Brownie’s convenience store across the street from Crystal Ballroom off Elmira Road NE which closed down February 24th 2018 after more than 50 years service! In 1984 James & Karen Kapp founded Kapp's Gourmet Grocery Store on SE corner First Avenue/Main Street which remains open today serving up some amazing German cuisine! They have been running this business since 1984! They are also known for their annual pumpkin pie festival which takes place during October each year! It's lots of fun for families who come out enjoy some delicious treats while supports local charities!
