Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 21,779 at the 2000 census. Greensburg is the second-largest city in Harrison County after Terre Haute. The city is located on the eastern edge of Harrison County and has a total area of 22 square miles (59 km²). The first settler in what would become Greensburg was David Wilburn who arrived on horseback in 1814. By 1840, there were 10 families living in the town. Greenough Township was organized in 1841 and by 1845, it had a population of 100. In 1861, Greenough Township became part of Harrison County when it was created from parts of Knox and Posey Counties. On July 1, 1907, Greensburg became an independent municipality with its own government under Mayor Harry Hays. On December 3rd 1915, voters passed an ordinance creating a fire department to fight fires within the City Limits only. On February 14th 1916 residents voted to name their new downtown street " Freedom Hall" after Abraham Lincoln's birthplace in Springfield Illinois which served as his home for many years prior to his assassination one year earlier that year. There are several historical buildings located throughout downtown Greensburg including: First Baptist Church (built 1792), American Legion Post #2 (1890), Henry Clay High School (1901), Wabash Valley Railroad Depot (1910) and most notably Brown House Tavern which served as headquarters for Confederate General John Pemberton during his 1863 attempt to invade Indiana from Kentucky during the American Civil War due to his belief that slavery should not be abolished within free states like Ohio because this would mean the end of slavery within these states overall! In 2002-2003 Hurricane Andrew destroyed much property close to Greensburg including homes valued at over $200K; however no injuries or fatalities occurred as a direct result ofAndrew’s passage throughthe community although damage caused by subsequent storms such as Rita/ Stanislaus left many homes without roofs or power for weeks afterwards! This event marked one time when all areas surrounding Greensburg were impacted by natural disasters simultaneously making it oneof Indy’s more innovative emergency response programs dating back some 50 years! The town was named after the hills around it, which people called "Greens" because of the greenery that grew there. The first store in Greensburgh opened in 1802. In 1827, a post office was established in Greensburgh. After the death of Nicholas Crouch, Greenburgh became an all-male town. In 1881, the first female teacher taught in Greensburgh Elementary School. The population of Greensburg peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but decreased to 6,500 by 1940.
