Greensburg, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elkhart County seat. Greensburg is located on the east bank of the White River. The first Europeans to visit Greensburg were French traders and missionaries in 1765. In 1814, George Washington Carver moved from Terre Haute, IN to Greencastle, IN and began farming there. He named his farm "Carver's Grove" after himself and two other men who had accompanied him on the trip. In 1840, David Rice founded what would become known as Rice & Company grocery store in Greensburg. The store became one of the largest in central Indiana before it closed its doors in 1986. In 1878, John Denny established a sawmill just south of town on Wabash Creek. Denny built an addition to his mill which still stands today - called "Denny's Mill". The mill continued operating until 1971 when it was taken down and replaced with a new structure that now houses local government offices. In 1912-13, while working as a clerk for Myron Estrin at his general store across from the old post office building (now used as apartments), Ira Hinton wrote one of Indianapolis' first love songs - "Mona Lisa." Greensburg is a small town in Nobles County, Indiana, United States. The population was 567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greensburg was founded in 1824 and named for General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought in the Mexican-American War. Greeneville, located to the north, became more important as a commercial and cultural center after Greenville Township was organized in 1835. In 1865, Greensburg acquired its own post office. By 1886, it had become an agricultural community with around 100 families residing on five square miles (12 km2). A few years later, Grain Growers' Bank bought out many of the local farmers and began grain marketing there. The bank remained active until it merged with First National Bank in 1916. In 1927-1928, Greensburg received an award from the American Planning Association for its "outstanding planning work." The heyday of Greeneville was before World War II when residents engaged in such activities as arts and crafts; political organizations; farming; fishing; worshiping at various churches/synagogues; playing ball games at school fields during summertime; and hosting county fairs every other year or so. After World War II ended hostilities among different groups that had characterized pre-war life - German Americans now living on Main Street started their own business enterprise called "Werner's" - Downtown Greensburg slowly declined due to all new services moving into town: retail businesses by 1970, professional offices by 1980 (including two hospitals), housing developments beginning around 1990/91 followed by factories closed within a generation or two as technological advances made production less necessary for most manufacturing jobs throughout much of America WWI-era veteran communities like Greensburg were either abandoned or gradually gentrified while smaller towns experienced continuous decline not reaching bottom until well into 21st century
The city of Greensburg, Indiana was founded on December 12, 1837 by James Green and his wife Eliza. The town was named for General Lafayette. The first post office in Greensburg was established in 1840. In 1845, the town saw its first crop of corn and began to grow other crops as well. By 1850, the population had grown to about 350 people. In 1851, a school was built in the town and it served as the primary education for locals until it closed in 1912. In 1865, a new courthouse was built and served as the legal center for Greensburg until it too closed in 1912. From 1903-1912, Greensburg also had an electric light system which provided illumination throughout the downtown area. In 1945, when Indianapolis became an independent city, Greensburg became part of that city's section called "Southside." However, due to its small size relative to other sections within Southside, most of Greensburg's municipal services were not transferred over to Indianapolis until 1971 when they were made part of the newly created City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works and Infrastructure
