Greensburg is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,968 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1837 by General David Dixon and selectmen John Clements and Isaac Merrill. The first store opened on Main Street in Greensburg on December 15 of that year. Dixon had built his home just east of the current courthouse Square on the site where he now lives. Greenville Cemetery was established in 1839 and contains the remains of many prominent citizens including General Dixon himself. The post office operated from 1837 to 1865; it was moved to its present location two years later. In 1868, a sawmill began operations on what is now Elm Street; this mill continued until 1978 when it closed due to economic factors and went out of business entirely. A gristmill also operated during this time but it too went out of business after only a few years due to competition from more efficient mills around town. In 1909, an all-black high school team named "The Greensburg Falcons" won their first state championship game against local white teams by a score of 43-0; they would go on to win four more championships between then and 1951 before being disbanded due to integration into nearby Terre Haute High School (now Terre Haute Community High School). In 1912, construction began on what would become known as "the cube" which still stands today as one of Greensburg's most recognizable landmarks - it was designed by renowned architect George Dance and became operational in 1914 (amidst much criticism from locals who felt that an all-white school could not compete with local blacks]). Named for Congressman James Mapes - another early pioneer in Greensburg - the cube served as both a primary educational resource for students attending local high schools as well as hosting social functions for various civic groups during its tenure. Greensburg, Indiana is a city in Hancock County, Indiana. The population was 7,836 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The city was founded in 1824 by General George Armstrong Custer and Major James Kapp as he attempted to build a road from Fort Wayne to Cairo, Illinois. In 1827, Green'sburgh was named for him as part of an effort to promote growth in the area around Fort Wayne. The first settler in Greensburg was John Aiken who arrived in 1825. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Greensburg. In 1845, Green'sburghs saw its most dramatic increase when it became home to one of the largest ironworks on the American continent. This operation produced cannons for both Union and Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. After the war, many of these cannons were melted down and used to make nails and other items until they finally fell into disrepair and disappeared from public view until 1976 when they were rediscovered and restored by local activists led by then-Mayor Don Knotts. In 1865, Greensburg experienced its greatest expansion with the arrival of railroad construction that would eventually connect Indianapolis with Louisville, Kentucky via Greensburg Station (later renamed Fort Wayne Central). At this time Green'sburgh had become a thriving town with over 400 residents and five churches/parishes within its boundaries. During World War II much activity took place within Greene'sburgh thanks to wartime production at the Iron Mountain Arsenal which employed up to 1,200 people including 50% local women workers during munitions manufacturing plants throughout America which contributed significantly towards creating numerous jobs across Hancock County overall while also contributing toward
