Greenfield is an unincorporated community in Jennings County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. It is located along the Wabash River. The first settler in Greenfield was Levi Hargrave in 1824. Greenfield started as acountry store and post office called "New Beginnings" on the banks of the Wabash River. In 1827, it became part of Jennings County and had a population of 25 settlers. The town site was surveyed by Anthony J. Smith in 1854 and laid out by him and James Ralston Jr.. On July 10, 1860, Greenfield received its own statehood from Indiana as a village under the name "Greenfield." In 1907, Alfred Siever opened what became known as Siever's Bagel Shop which remained open until 1991 when it closed due to bankruptcy. The building still stands vacant today but has been demolished for development purposes. On February 15th, 1927 Brown brothers erected a two-story log schoolhouse near present day intersection of Wabash and Broadway avenues in what is now called "Old School House Square". A new school built on the same location replaced it in 1958 after several years of use as an old-time meeting hall/church services center with a capacity of 100 people thunderstorming during winter months. Today this building houses various offices including that of Hendricks Township (local government) members' office since November 2009; home to local band concerts during summer months; used courtroom prior to Evansville Municipal Court moving into its current location downtown late 2006; also home to library services starting January 1st 2009; renovated gymnasium beginning October 2013 after being abandoned for many years before that date; also contains museum April 2014 depicting early history/settlement around town According to the 2010 census, there are 2,914 residents living within ZIP code 47601 who identify as Republican Party unaffiliated voters or independent voters only (29% compared to 47% for all other political affiliations). In 1865, Greenfield became an incorporated city and its first mayor was Abraham Sibley. The population of Greenfield grew from 300 to 3,500 during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1851, Greenfield became one of the first towns in Indiana to be organized as a township.
