By 2000, Greenfield had regained some of its former pace of development thanks to new businesses such as online shopping website Amazon (amzn) and an increasing number of historic homes being preserved for family fun or used as apartments or condominiums. Greenfield, Indiana is a town in and the county seat of Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,951 at the 2010 census. It was founded by James Greenfield in 1814. The community was named for Greenfield Township, Pennsylvania where he and his family had moved from before their arrival in Kosciusko County. The first post office in Greenfield was established on October 14, 1815. The present post office building was built in 1907 and replaced a previous structure that had been destroyed by a fire in 1904. In 1903, the city of Greensboro started to be developed east of the village of Greenfield as an attempt to attract more residents to the area. When it became clear that Greensboro would not reach enough population growth to support its own government, the village voted to secede from Greensboro and form its own municipality on December 3, 1903. On November 1, 1907 – two years after their incorporation as a town – Greenfield voters passed an ordinance establishing a school board with five members instead of four that had been authorized by the city’s ordinance setting up the same system for schools within municipalities within Kosciusko County (four members). A new high school opened for students in 1912 named after then-Governor John Pemberton and later renamed Kosciusko State University; it served as both primary and secondary educational institutions until 1978 when it merged with Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus becoming Purdue–West Lafayette University effective July 1st of that year. On January 5th 1922 – one year after Carbondale-Muncie's incorporation as a city – citizens of Carbondale approved an ordinance establishing therein a school board with seven members instead of six authorized by an earlier ordinance setting up no such system for schools within Carbondale municipality; this decision also enabled Carbondale to become self-governing through legislation enacted on February 22nd 1922 following local elections which were held on May 4th preceding annexation into Monmouth County effective July 1st having previously functioned only as part of Carbondale township under state law while Monmouth County operated under territorial jurisdiction subject only to state law governing counties within Illinois including but not limited to Cook county which included Racineans living eastward along Lake Michigan including but not limited to Kendallville located just south across DuPage River from Nauvoo) following passage by General Assembly resolution 4573 providing: “That there be erected hereby proper municipal buildings without delay upon such plat or land situate at or near said Village Of Carbondale aforesaid belonging now unto said Village Of Decatur aforesaid being desired by said Village And being necessary for carrying out all provisions hereof” In 1923 - one year after Main Street passing through town limits - construction began on what is now known as Main Street Avenue which followed much similar path during its entire length prioritizes commerce over residences due largely to lack thereof available at that time following enactment by General Assembly Resolution 4583 providing: “That certain streets throghout this Town be called Main Street avenues separate from other streets thereby making it possible for more business houses than ever before can stand sideby side upon main thoroughfares throughout this Town And putting an end finallyt too many people coming into our midst who cannot afford Streets better than they have now” It wasn't until 1990 whenMain Street Ave designation changed from "avenue"
