Greenfield, Indiana is a small town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1854 by General James Wilkinson and other pioneers from Ohio and Kentucky. Greenfield was named for Colonel George Green of Ohio's 4th Regiment of Cavalry who had fought in the Mexican-American War and in the Indian Wars. In 1862, Colonel Green donated land to help build a new courthouse and jail which were completed in 1865. The town contains a total of six schools: one public school (grades K-8), two private schools (grades 9-12), one parochial school (grades 7-12), one technical school (Grade 8 & 9), and two business/trade academies (grades 11 & 12). Founded as a post office on May 20, 1854 by General James Wilkinson with John Fenton as first mail carrier, Greenfield became an official community on October 3rd when it joined LaPorte County. At its peak within five years it had three stores and twelve residents; however by 1860 only one store remained open with just ten residents living in what is now the downtown area; most residents lived scattered around farms or near river crossings where they could fish or hunt game for their own subsistence purposes. During this time there were no streetlights or telephone service so travelers needed to be prepared for dark times when traveling through such remote areas The first permanent settler arrived hereabouts in 1864 with Captain Isaac Coffin from Cincinnati after driving out alligators that were harassing settlers along the Wabash River close to present day Lafayette In 1875, postmaster Jno Hanks built his home at 5111 N Main Street while continuing to serve as clerk until his death on September 30th following a long career at the Post Office including over 25 years In 1893, Mrs Lula Burt started her own grocery store which remains today’s anchor tenant at 501 S Main Street On January 1st 1912 William Haughton opened up his hardware store at 502 S Main Street which would become known as “The Hardware Store That Stayed Open” until it closed during prohibition days It wasn't until 1925 when employment opportunities opened up with Father Edward McGee starting out at Christian Brothers School then moving into his current location inside of The First Methodist Church across from North High School which would later become Joe Gibbs Middle School before being torn down due to declining Attendance numbers . On July 15th 1951 Pueblo Industries moved into their current facility located next door becoming Purdue Polytechnic Institute followed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company leaving Greenfield without an industry presence until November 2nd 1966 when IHOP opened upsite across from Wabash Elementary making it finally possible for locals like myself to get our hands dirty once again !

Greenfield is a town in Indiana, United States. The population was 5,083 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bloomington-Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to enter what is now Greenfield was Frenchman Jean Baptiste Caron on July 4, 1795 when he landed on the east side of the current village site from his ship "Nova". He named it after himself, "Carondelette" (meaning new or virgin). Greenfield was platted in 1824 by Captain John Tipton and Dr. Edward Hinkle as a post office called New Paris. It became an incorporated town in 1834. The original courthouse and jail were built there in 1835 and 1840 respectively. The first store opened in Greenfield on October 6, 1830 by James Wickersham of Indianapolis. In 1849, Greenfield became one of four townships within Clinton Township when that township was created from parts of PlainFIELD, Orion Township, and Vernon Township. In 1865, all but three townships within Clinton Township were reorganized into Johnson County when it was created from part of Hamilton Township. The population density for Greenfield increased steadily until reaching its peak at 1,890 people per square mile (698/km²) in 1920; however this trend reversed beginning with World War II when the population decreased as war production shifted to munitions plants overseas. In 1990 the population had shrunk to 533 persons due largely to a decrease in housing values and FIRE risk concerns following the release of toxic gas leaked from manufacturing sites along I-465 throughtowns north of Bloomington-Normal during 1984-1985 operations at Decatur & White Sands Shipyards LLC.. However since 2000 growth has resumed with new construction projects such as a high school gymnasium and new stores opening including Abercrombie & Fitch which replaced Macy's closure in 2006 followed by Sears Canada closing its location adjacent to I-465 just east of town in 2013 reducing traffic congestion around that intersection while also providing much needed economic development opportunities for families living near I-465 outside Steel Town Center mall located several miles south west of town
