The Gist/Henshaw wagon train consisted of 17 people including six women and four children. After arriving in central Indiana they organized a village called Bruinsburg which quickly grew into a large town with over 100 residents. In 1827, Nicholas Gist donated land totaling 1 mile square east of his original village to form what is now Greenwood Township. He also donated $5 per acre towards building roads and schools within his township; this helped contribute significantly to Greenfield's growth during the early years. Over time different individuals or groups continued to donate property until alluvial deposits totaling more than 8 acres were available within walking distance of most residents! Today much of that land remains undeveloped; however it still offers excellent opportunities for exploration! During World War II many factories closed down due to shortages in materials; however Greenfield did not suffer as heavily as some other areas in the statedue primarily to its location close to Interstate 65! In fact after the war many new businesses came online including several breweries which continue today! Additionally several small stores opened up which have continued into recent decades! Overall these examples show just how resilient our community has been during various tough times!
Greenfield was founded in 1827 by Solomon Greenfield and Martha Jane Whitcomb. The first store was on the corner of Main and State Streets. The town grew quickly, and within a few years had a school, post office, two churches, three stores, and a sawmill. In 1835, Greenfield became the county seat of Harrison County. A railroad was built through Greenfeld in 1849, making it easier for people to get to the larger cities in Indiana. After several years of growth, the town declined in popularity and ceased to exist as an entity in 1898.
