A few miles east of Greenfield stands one of America's earliest commercial buildings - First National Bank - which opened its doors on November 15, 1830 (the same day as greenfields namesake). In 1836-37 a group of Methodist ministers founded what became known as First Presbyterian Church () near what is now Main Street (). The first pastor was Revs.[?] Andrew Whitehurst and his wife Hester Pemberton Whitehurst (), who served until 1840 when they moved to Terre Haute where they began serving Second Presbyterian Church (). They were followed by Revs.[?] Ebenezer Higgins (1840-1847),[? ] Chauncey Gardner (1848-1853), George Witherspoon (1854-1858),[? ], Hiram Jensbury (?, 1865)), Elijah Goldsmith (?, 1867)),and Lewis Browning (?, 1870)). Thereafter services wereheld at various homes through 1870 before finally being conducted at First Presbyterian Church from September 1st 1880 until it burned down on December 12th 1881 (). The cornerstone for First Presbyterian church was laid on October 14th 1881 by Revs.? Cyrus Ewing Huffman (), James Aiken Whitcomb (), Augustus Kelley Greene (), Reuben Kappner Jr., ?(?,?). lumber merchants Addison Weller (.?), Solomon Gault (!?) bushel wagonloads of flour bound for St Joseph's Logging Company out of Lafayette IL came ashore while loading at Queenstown Landing early Saturday morning August 25th 1830 only about 30 rods from shore but no damage done probably due high winds rather then any storms eventuated . At that time there were over 1000 people living in what later became Greenfield Village including many families with children attending school downtown also! This beautiful sight can be seen today standing tall behind power lines next to Interstate 64 just outside Terre Haute IN

The Village of Greenfield was platted in 1827 by Simon Granger and other early settlers near what is now Terre Haute, IN. The post office was established in 1830, and the first store opened in 1835. TheVillage name derived from "green field" which referred to the virgin forest that surrounded it at the time of its platting. In 1840, Greenfield became one of three townships formed from parts of Rt 2 Township (now Terre Haute). That year saw a land boom as farmers began to purchase large tracts of land around present day Greenfield Village and Town Center. By 1845 there were over 100 businesses operating in what would become known as "The Village". One major factor leading to this growth was the opening of the Belknap Canal in 1847 which allowed goods and passengers to be transported directly between Indianapolis and Chicago without having to journey through Springfield or other key cities on their way northward. This helped increase trade within central Indiana while also providing access to new markets such as Detroit and Minneapolis. During this time period too, Greenfield saw an influx of immigrants with many coming from Italy, Hungary and Russia who were looking for opportunities outside their homes during a time when those shores were still underdeveloped compared to today's countries Baltic states etcetera In 1850-1851 there was even an attempt by Congress to pass legislation granting voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color but this did not come about due to popular opposition from both Republicans & Democrats throughout much of America however similar laws have been passed subsequent years giving some preferential treatment based on ethnicity & race elsewhere in America today although no legal binding document has ever been issued!
