The name of the town was given to it by General George Washington and his troops during their campaign against the British in 1775. Greenfield is located on the east bank of the Whitewater River. The first white settlers in Greenfield were John and Susanna White who arrived from England in 1802. They cultivated land and raised livestock until 1815 when they built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1830, Eli Thayer moved to Greenfield from Manchester Township with his family and started an agricultural store called Thayer's Store which lasted until 1865. In 1836, David Hite purchased two tracts of land east of Greenfield from James Ford for $100 dollars and began farming there. He also built aLog Cabin which still stands today on East Main Street near where he lived until his death in 1906. By 1850, over eighty-five farmers had settled in Greenfield with only seven businesses operating: six farms and one mill; two blacksmiths; one attorney; one tailor; one shoemaker; three minor merchants (one antiques dealer); four Baptist ministers (two preaching sermons each); ten schoolteachers (six male students each); five harnessmakers; five sawyers; four physicians (allopaths). Baptist minister Elijah Pemberton officiated at the first church service held in Greenfield on December 6th, 1852 by Rev G W Stroud as part of celebrations marking fifty years since America won its independence from Great Britain! From that time forward every Sunday morning someone would approach Reverend Pemberton with an idea for worship or sermon while he preached at home before starting out on their various travels throughout central Indiana that year! During this time Reverend Pemberton also served as Chaplain to both Hancock County Court House under Judge William Tompkins between 1860-1862 then again from 1870-1872 when he took office as Sheriff after serving for three terms as District Attorney prior thereto! As early as 1865 there were plans to build a Methodist Episcopal Church but because no funding could be found local builders instead constructed schools around town including grade school #1 which opened September 15th 1865 teacher Mrs Anna J Carrshaw taught students below grade level using chalk boards outside! This was followed by high school opened October 1st 1870 with same classes conducted using large classrooms inside #2 soon followed by post high school building completed November 10th 1880!! A new courthouse/ jail/ jailer's office building developed southeast corner High School Building along present day course Simon Road just south of First Street !! There are many wonderful stories associated with these buildings such as Mrs Carrshaw’s efforts to teach young ladies “the ABC” including English Literature & History while services were being held outdoors even though it rained all week long!!! When finally finished she gave THANKS card back to contractor who had brought her materials plus said Built With Pride sign added!! It should be noted that some excellent architects - Newmark & Meier - designed much later additions/modifications to original structures particularly Courthouse Annex addition included modern air conditioning facilities which continue to serve today!!!! Today many people enjoy walking or biking trails through town providing several miles worthof hiking and biking opportunities available especially good for children ages 4 thru 8 years old!!!!!

Greenfield was founded in 1837 by Captain John S. Griggs and his wife Lois Bicknell Griggs on the north side of what is now known as White River Township. Greenfield was platted on March 3, 1837 by captain John S. Griggs and his wife Lois Bicknell Griggs. Greenfield was named for Green Fields Farm on which the first settler lived and from where he took his name from. The original surveyed land for Greenfield included parts of what are now White River Township, Goshen Township, and part of today's Kosciusko County. In 1860, Captain John Sgriggs' son-in-law Daniel Boone bought some of the original survey land from Captain John Sgrigg's widow Lois Bicknell Grigg for $1 cash only – this purchase set off a long legal battle between Boone andGriggs over who actually owned that land! In 1863 when Confederate General Robert Ealy invaded Indiana to capture Fort Wayne (later renamed Indianapolis), Captains Jhonny Griggs and Lewis Fenton decided to fight alongside theirUnion brother against Ealy instead of surrendering or bowing out like many other officers inIndiana during the Civil War! In 1865 Captains Jhonny Griggs and Lewis Fenton were courtmartialed for their part in the war but were acquitted due to lack of evidence!
